Times like today when mental health awareness is soaring high, people are talking about their hardships and are not ashamed to put themselves out there. It is an era of body positivity, but it is also the time where we have started using serious words like trauma, anxiety and behavioural disorders frivolously. Don’t get us wrong, we love this movement and this new wave that has risen due to people getting up and talking about their experiences. There is nothing more beautiful than people recognizing that they are the victim and it what happened to them was not their fault and standing up against their oppressors.
But it is equally important for people to realize the importance and weight of the words they throw around casually. Being aware is one thing, using tags to fit in another. By doing this we not only end up making the topic light but also make it difficult for people who are going through it. For example you do not have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) if you ‘like’ cleaning. OCD is a serious disorder and people going through have struggle sometimes to do one task like a normal person. It is very important that we research about something or even better consult to a professional before associating ourselves with such terms.
Due to unexpected situations like the ‘lockdown’ happening in the year 2020, a revolution regarding the awareness of mental health took place which was incredibly healthy and liberating in times when people were finding it really hard to cope up with this different lifestyle. People talking about their experiences has made many of us feel at home. It is important for the sanctity of those who have struggled to make this possible. Though talked about a lot, mental health is still considered a taboo in many a parts of the world it is important for people to understand the seriousness of the business and not just brush it off. It is important that people recognize the significance of it and how much it affects an individual in their day to day lives so that they are more empathetic and helpful to people struggling around them.
In a world where people fail to feel understood and heard, it is very important that we continue to make the world a conducive place for them where their struggles are acknowledged and they are able to travel smoothly on their road to recovery.
